For P.K. Sanoj of Mannampetta, life has been a marathon—not just on the athletics track, but in overcoming challenges to pursue his dream of wearing a uniform. Sanoj joined Kerala Varma College for his pre-degree studies with aspirations of joining a uniformed service. However, circumstances forced him to put his ambitions on hold, and he began earning a living as an auto-rickshaw driver.
Refusing to give up on his dream, Sanoj learned that outstanding performances in sports could open opportunities for temporary appointments in uniformed services through the Employment Exchange. With natural athletic ability, he dedicated himself to competitive running.
His hard work paid off when he won gold medals in the 100-metre and 200-metre events at the State Masters Athletics Championships. He later represented India in Masters Athletics competitions in Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka, winning medals with the support of local sponsors. He also excelled in Masters Swimming, adding several medals to his achievements.
Dream of Wearing the Uniform
His sporting success eventually caught the attention of the Thrissur District Employment Exchange, which offered him a six-month appointment as an Assistant Prison Officer at the Thrissur Central Jail.
For 179 days, Sanoj proudly served in the prison department. At the end of his tenure, the Jail Superintendent presented him with a certificate recognising his dedicated service—a moment that marked the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream.
Beyond Sports
Sanoj also nurtured a passion for acting. He has appeared in small roles in films and television serials and has performed stage shows, including impersonations of actor Fahadh Faasil.
A Disciplined Daily Routine
Even today, Sanoj maintains a rigorous schedule. His mornings begin with farming at his home until around 10 a.m. After that, he drives his auto-rickshaw in Thrissur city. Once back home, he spends his evenings training in athletics and swimming.
His story is one of perseverance, proving that determination and discipline can keep a dream alive, no matter how long the journey.
