Malakkappara/Thrissur: A 55-year-old tourist who plunged nearly 30 feet into a gorge at the Thottapura Viewpoint in Malakkappara was rescued in a challenging operation jointly carried out by the police, Forest Department personnel and a tourist bus driver on Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 12.30 pm when Arjun (55), a native of Peruvallur in Mullassery panchayat, was admiring the scenic view at the popular viewpoint. He reportedly slipped accidentally and fell into the steep gorge below.
His cries for help alerted other visitors, who immediately informed the Malakkappara police and the Forest Department.
A rescue team led by Malakkappara Sub-Inspector Jason, Civil Police Officers Sushanth and Praveen, and Forest watcher Girish rushed to the spot. They were joined by tourist bus driver Anuraj, who volunteered to assist in the operation.
The rescue was particularly difficult as the victim had fallen into a rocky, slippery and steep section of the gorge. Without specialised rescue equipment, the team carefully climbed down the hazardous terrain and reached the injured man.
After locating Arjun with serious injuries, the rescuers used ropes to painstakingly lift him back to safety. The operation lasted several hours before he was finally brought to the top.
Following first aid at the scene, Arjun was shifted to a hospital for specialised treatment. Police and Forest Department officials were praised by bystanders for their swift response and courageous efforts, which helped save the tourist’s life.
