Thrissur: DYFI State Secretary V.K. Sanoj has criticised the social media campaign against a play staged as part of the DYFI district conference, saying that only selected scenes from the performance were taken out of context and circulated.
Sanoj said the criticism was being raised by people who failed to understand the political context of the play. The play, titled MISA, deals with the period of Emergency in India and depicts the torture and persecution faced during that period.
He said the play was being viewed through the lens of morality, while those circulating isolated scenes were allegedly attempting to make people forget and conceal the history of the Emergency.
According to Sanoj, the play had previously been staged at several venues without attracting such controversy. He stressed that artistic freedom should be protected.
Sanoj also said that the play portrays the torture directly faced by theatre personality Snehalata Reddy during the Emergency. He added that only those without a political understanding could engage in such a campaign against the play.
