Thrissur: CPI MLA and foremer revenue minister K. Rajan has strongly criticised the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) over the recent Kaipamangalam accident, alleging that the authority is acting against public sentiment and taking a completely irresponsible approach to national highway development in Kerala.
Speaking to the media, Rajan said the NHAI appeared to be more concerned about collecting tolls than addressing the concerns and safety of the people.
“The NHAI is acting against public sentiment. Its approach on Kerala’s national highways is completely irresponsible. Its only aim appears to be toll collection. They trust the contracting company, but not the people,” Rajan said.
He warned that strong public protests could emerge if the concerns of local residents and road users continue to be ignored.
Rajan’s remarks come in the wake of the Kaipamangalam accident, which has triggered widespread public concern over safety measures and the handling of the national highway.
Strong Opposition to PM SHRI Scheme
On the PM SHRI school scheme, Rajan said secular Kerala had collectively opposed the project and alleged that the Chief Minister and the UDF were now attempting to implement it by going against the public sentiment in the state.
“If an attempt is made to implement PM SHRI, there will be serious consequences and major people’s protests will emerge,” he said.
Rajan said the responsibility for any such protests would rest with the Chief Minister and the UDF.
He also questioned the pressure behind the government’s determination to proceed with the scheme and asked whether it was due to political pressure or an obligation to the Centre.
“The Chief Minister must answer to Kerala,” Rajan said.
He added that the state had received a written response indicating that there was no obstacle to withdrawing the MoU. He also questioned whether the Centre had officially informed Kerala that Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK) funds would be withheld if the state did not implement PM SHRI.
Rajan said that, except for the BJP, secular sections across Kerala were united in opposing the implementation of the scheme. He added that if the issue was related to financial constraints, it should be dealt with through political and legal means.
Opposition Deputy Leader Dispute
On the dispute over the Opposition Deputy Leader’s post, Rajan said the national leadership of both parties had made it clear that the issue could be resolved within Kerala itself.
